I still say female’s have no place in motor racing anywhere in the world. In Indy cars, they are there just for the promotional idiots … Putting girls behind the wheel provides fodder for the columnists but must strike fear in the hearts of real race drivers who have to deal with them at high speed … if girls can do it, just how difficult is it. IMHO
From ESPNW - Danica Patrick ends IndyCar career on tragic day [comments section]
OK - So we all know that I’m a sportsaholic. Most people have also figured out that I’m a female - who srsly dislikes sexism. So when a friend of mine pointed out this comment on the story regarding Danica Patrick (who I’m not particularly a fan of, to be frank), I decided to do a little checking on the boys vs. girls driving stereotype.
The commenter said girls behind the wheel must strike fear in the hearts of real race drivers. Really?? Why? Because they are safer?? Because with what I’ve found floating about the interwebs that’s the piece of information I’ve run across most in this debate. (here is one such article with statsy numbers and such, not just a personal opinion piece.) Insurance people charge women less because they’re considered safer drivers, they break the law less frequently, they are more responsible and less risky behind the wheel. The recklessness of male drivers leads to more DUI’s, fatal crashes and whatnot.
So why does this stereotype live on, and not just with this one commenter?? I will not even begin to address the “if girls can do it” portion of his silly comment at this moment for real fear of breaking the keys upon which I type.
If you want to talk about Danica ‘deserving’ a place in a car based upon her own personal performance, go ahead. No, she’s not a big time winner of races. In fact, I think she’s only won one (I am a very rare race watcher/follower, unless it relates to the movie Days of Thunder). But according to this year’s standings, she was 10th. Does anyone complain about the place of the 38 people listed below her? Not to my knowledge, other than probably hating Patrick’s teammate Ana Beatriz, a female who finished 21st.
Aside from the general stupidity of the males vs. females argument, of all times to be even bringing this up after, Patrick’s last IndyCar race is NOT THE TIME. Why? Because a young man lost his life at that race. Addressing the loss of Dan Wheldon in a tragic and completely scary looking accident, opening a discussion on the safety of open car racing, or remembering the 33 year old who left behind a widow and two small children is what these fans of racing should be doing. Rather, people are bringing this back to how bad women drivers are and how good it is that Patrick won’t be in an IndyCar from here on out. Please.
Rest in peace, Mr. Wheldon.
