The unsanctity of marriage - Kardashian edition
In light of the recent divorce news coming out of Hollywood from their newest couple, I thought it was an appropriate time for a mini rant. So…
Why the hell is this news?? They are ‘celebrities’ (if I use the term loosely) … who engaged in an apparent publicity mongering reality tv-based tour du jour. This is sickening. Like there isn’t enough real news to go around right now. Sigh.
If you take away the reported 10 million dollars the Kardashians spent on the wedding itself from the 17.2 million they earned in selling the rights to the wedding, Kimmy K banked 7.2 million in 72 days of wedded bliss. That’s 100K a day, right? So that means $4166 an hour, or $69 a minute. Ummm….what??? The 99% should look to their A, B, C & D-list celebs on the financial gap between the haves and have-nots. Not just to the businessy Wall Streeters. Holy moly. That means she made more in an hour than I made for the entirety of her faux marriage by just about double.
Irreconcilable differences?? Um. Srsly?? 72 days into ‘forever’ and you have such problems that you can’t resolve? One, that is the biggest copout on divorce proceedings ever. You should have to man/woman up and spill the legit reason why you’re getting divorced. Maybe this irks me more than it should because this was the reasoning used by my former husband rather than “sleeping around is more fun than being married and I didn’t want to stop” (sorry if that is TMI for you). And two, if you do indeed encounter irreconcilable differences, shouldn’t you work to reconcile them before dissolving your marriage? There is no way in 72 days these people worked to resolve whatever is breaking up their marriage bond.
Marriage is cheapened by stories like this. It shouldn’t be so easy to enter and exit into this so-called sanctity of marriage. It shouldn’t be a joke, or a publicity stunt, or a fly-by-night decision. Particularly not when many same-sex committed couples don’t even have the opportunity to enter into marriage despite their relationships lasting for years and years longer than this marriage survived. I will never be getting married again, partly due to the fact that it doesn’t mean anything anymore, other than a tax break. If that sounds cynical as hell, so be it. I’m fine with my decision to stay in the single category on my taxes from here on out whether I find someone to share my life with or not.
If this story doesn’t show the unreality of reality television, I don’t know what will. How very ridiculous this whole thing is. And how very saddened I am at society that this is overwhelming story of the day.
