Minds are like parachutes - they only function when open. -Thomas Dewar
When I saw this quote come across my Twitter, I thought about what a great statement this is. Then I began to ponder the source, Thomas Dewar. Hmm….who was this Dewar, as the only Dewar I know comes in the form of liquid libations. Surprisingly enough, after some googling, this Lord Thomas Robert Dewar who is attributed with this saying is one in the same with the Scottish whiskey maker.
And then I stumbled across his wiki page, which reads in part - “He was a JP for Kent and a Lieutenant of the City of London, Sheriff of London in 1897, and then entered politics as Conservative Member of Parliament for Tower Hamlets, St George from 1900 to 1906. During this period, Dewar was noted for his hostility to “pauper immigration” and played an active part in campaigning for the legislation that became the Aliens Act 1905. As the predominint emigrant group arriving in the East End in this period were Jews from Eastern Europe, Dewar’s statements have been generally regarded as anti-semitic.”
Well, wow.
This certainly does not sound like the open mind I was expecting to read about. “Do as I say, not as I do” in full force. How utterly dissapointing. Some things apparently never change, eh?
Cheers. :/
